Short Film Research: It's Been a While

Image
It's Been a While is about a period of 3 years since a woman and her ex-boyfriend spoke. The film is five minutes long and as a short is shows and goes through a roller coaster of a woman craving human interaction or intimacy from someone. She's calling her ex non-stop, leaving many voice messages, and rambles on and on. She overthinks everything she says and cares about her ex's opinion forcing her to lie and seem like shes living fine without him. Towards the end she realizes her own incompetence and end her charade swining back into her own world of loneliness and silence. The dialogue and sound of her actions allowed the short film to be successful. The entire time the woman was talking until she restricts herself. Emotion was greatly shown by her acting and anxious frustration with herself made a big difference. The setting stayed to the minimum of her apartment. Moving around from the bathroom, living room, and bedroom showed how anxious and desperate she is to get a...

Short Film Research: The Gallery

Image
The Gallery is 8 minutes long and is a drama about losing/figuring out your self-identity. The main character is a women that has entered an audition for a career however mid-way through she no longer wants to be there. The film sticks to short film conventions as it has one setting the entire time and is carried by dialogue and acting. The women looks frustrated, confused, and indecisive as time goes on and the major twist is when she finally gives in to her expression and leaves the audition and see her judge also outside. The actions are a bit rhetorical and can be laughed at as the drama heightens. Her acting carries the scenes and in the beginning her silence while the director rambles can be a hint on non-interest.

Short Film Research: Bruiser

Image
Bruiser is a short film thats 10 minutes long. Its about a father and son relationship thats in jeopardy due to the father's ego and pride getting him into fights. The son doesn't want his father to interfere in situations because he makes situations worse and doesn't realize it. As a kid rumors go around fast and getting picked on by others because of your dad isn't ideal. Towards the end the father realizes how his mistakes caused his son to take drastic measures and become his own man due to his dad being unreliable. Although he failed, the father feels guilt and ashamed. It's titled bruiser to characterize the dad as someone who bruises people in fights, or a nickname kids would create. The film was great with the intervals of silence because it allowed actions and emotions to be seen. The film fast tracked-time using transitions, pan shots, and silent character interaction but acting was good. The settings were kept to a limit here and went good with the ...

Short Film Research: The Last 3 Minutes

Image
The Last 3 Minutes is a short film and is only about 5 minutes long. In actuality its 4 minutes without the credits. My genre is drama and I enjoyed it. The film begins with an overlooked janitor that is mopping a center floor and has either a heart attack or a stroke. He clenches his chest and a flood of past memories of his whole life "flashed before him." The memories were happy, random, heartwarming, or full of fear. A woman was the main memory he thought about and their happiness together. The memory clips began with her and they all had amazing transitions which was done by editing. Afterwards, janitor came back to screen and he died, dropping a diamond/gem out of his hand. Alluding to the message that "life's a gem." The load of memories also qualified for this short film to have multiple settings and a good handful of characters, challenging the conventions with limited amounts. The lighting here varied based on the experience of the janitor and happin...

How to make a Short Film

Image
Short films are fast but hold value and can prove interesting/effective if done right. These are typically 5-35 minutes long. The conventions of a short film is to have the least amount of characters possible. Doing this avoids the rush to develop character relationships and makes it easy to hold interactions without keeping someone as an important character. Another limitation is on the amount of locations set in the film. To many locations and transitions could become messy and over-piled if done incorrectly. If a stray cartoon cat was roaming all of over until it reached a home, this plot with many settings would work. However, its other instances, too much going on could diminish the film. The last main convention is that there is always a twist, shock, or cliffhanger. With a small amount of time, you must be able to have rising action main climax, declining action, and resolution. Adding in the twist creates excitement in the short film. Our Professor assigned us a vi...

Comparing Le Jetee, the short, and 12 Monkeys full length Movie

Image
Part 1 -  Video  This video was very in depth of how the effort and outcome of this film matched each other to a standard of excellence. This movie invited people in because the genre of scientific fiction, drama, and thriller together are so intriguing. The film's shifts throughout time are well done and the effects and editing process greatly contributed to this. While watching the video, you can see the important little details being taken care of to a great extent. Small traits like this inn film could be overlooked and remembering this is great.  Part 2 - Article This article really emphasizes the similarities between the two films. 12 Monkeys is closely detailed and could be a clouded mirror reflection of the older movie, Le Jetee. I think it was super creative for the narrator of Jetee to have been actually apart of the film until the audience is left in a state of shock when the narrating character dies. With film being so diverse, there is multiple ways to...

Comparing 9, the Short and 9, the Full-Length Movie

Image
I've watched both versions of the 9 film, short and full. Overall, both films were interesting and would do an efficient job of keeping viewers engaged. Short Film - 7:07 The short film was exceedingly quick. I couldn't understand and quickly grasp what was going on because from beginning to end it was high intensity and climax scenes.  Full-Length Film - 1:19:24 The full movie was amazing. With everything planned out and plot twists coming randomly, I was truly interested. The twists weren't basic where someone could've guessed what would happen next.     With a developed film like this, it truly shares and defines the difference of a short films goal and effectiveness. After watching the full length film, all the information shared and scenes that occurred made couldn't have been known of interpreted just by watching the short film. The short film began where #5 was getting grabbed by the robots and devoured. Following, the film relied on the thrills of #9 being...

Our Genre Focus

Image
After doing different selections of genre research me and my group hunkered down on Drama as our focus genre. We leaned a bit toward thriller but it wouldn't fully develop in our film because our plot isn't for someone to haunted but just memories clouding up a character's mind.  Drama is in a category of itself where the dialogue is it's main attribute.   A drama is attractive, impactful, and real as it presents characters along with a natural and credible aspects. It is very similar to a short story as it also comprises characters, plot, setting as well as symbolism. Therefore we'll be using our actors to the best of our ability to relay messages and develop the emotions that are supposed to be portrayed. Mainly being frustration, happiness, confusion, euphoric, and mostly guilt.
